But the situation in June 2026 is a little different than it used to be. With new rules and some surprisingly good news for certain areas, there’s a lot to catch up on!
Whether you’re looking for driving lessons in Glasgow or you're just starting your journey with a driving school in Lanarkshire, here are 10 things you absolutely need to know about the current waiting times.
1. The Numbers: What Does the Wait Actually Look Like?
Let’s get the big numbers out of the way first. As of June 2026, the average wait time for a test in Glasgow is hovering around the 5-month mark, but it really depends on which centre you pick. Here’s a quick breakdown of what we’re seeing:
- Shieldhall: ~23 weeks (The longest wait in the city!)
- Bishopbriggs: ~22.9 weeks
- Baillieston: ~22.5 weeks
- Paisley: ~21 weeks
- Anniesland: possibly shorter than most Glasgow centres, but availability can change quickly
Anniesland may be one of the quicker options at times, with a bit more availability than some of the busier centres. If you’re flexible with your location, it might be worth considering a different test centre, just make sure you’ve practiced on those specific roads first!
2. The New "3 Nearest Centres" Rule
As of June 9th, 2026, the DVSA has introduced a big change to how you can move your test. In the past, people would book a test in the middle of nowhere just to get a date, and then try to "swap" it for a Glasgow slot later.
Now, you can only transfer your existing test appointment to one of the three closest test centres to your original booking. This is designed to stop people from "centre-hopping" across the country and keeps local tests available for local learners. It’s a great move for fairness, but it means you need to be strategic about where you book your first slot!
3. A Hard Cap on Changes
We all love a bit of flexibility, but the DVSA is tightening the belt. You are now limited to just two changes for your test booking. If you try to change the date or centre for a third time, you’ll have to cancel the whole thing and start from scratch.
This is why it’s so important to talk to your instructor before you hit that "confirm" button. We want to make sure you’re actually ready before you use up one of your precious "change" credits!
4. Goodbye, Third-Party Booking Bots
If you’ve ever felt like the good test slots vanish in milliseconds, you were probably competing against automated bots. Well, the DVSA has finally pulled the plug on them!
From June 2026, only learner drivers can book tests on the system. Third-party brokers and "resale" sites have been locked out. This is brilliant news because it means when a cancellation pops up, it’s actually going to a real person (like you!) rather than a computer program looking to make a profit.
5. Anniesland: The "Fast-Track" Secret?
While Shieldhall and Baillieston are struggling with massive backlogs, Anniesland sometimes seems to have slightly shorter waits. Why? It’s often down to examiner availability and local demand patterns, and those can shift pretty quickly.
However, don't just book Anniesland because it may be faster. Each test centre has its own unique quirks (hello, tricky junctions!). If you’re used to the roads in Renfrewshire, switching to Anniesland might feel like a whole new world. At ADA, we recommend having at least a couple of lessons in the area where you plan to take your test.
6. The "Hidden Cost" of Long Waits
Waiting 23 weeks for a test isn't just annoying: it can actually be expensive. If you finish your "intensive" training but then have to wait five months for a test, your skills might start to get a bit rusty.
This "skill fade" often leads to learners needing "maintenance lessons" (usually one an hour every week or two) just to stay sharp. Over five months, those extra lessons can add up! 7. Real-Time Data is Finally Here
Starting on June 18th, 2026, the DVSA began publishing detailed, real-time waiting-time data for every individual test centre. No more guessing or relying on "what a friend said."
You can now see the exact pressure on centres like Bishopbriggs or Paisley before you book. This transparency is helping learners make better choices about where to sit their exam. Check the official DVSA site regularly, as these numbers shift as more examiners are hired or more slots are released.
8. Beating the Backlog: Cancellation Hunting
Even with a 23-week wait, people do cancel their tests. Life happens! To grab a cancellation:
- Check early in the morning: New slots often drop around 6:00 AM.
- Be persistent: Sometimes checking on a Tuesday afternoon yields a surprise.
- Stay local: Remember the 3-centre rule! You can only swap to the three closest centres to your original choice.
Because the bots are gone, your chances of grabbing a manual cancellation are much higher than they were last year.
9. Booking Off-Peak
Did you know that demand for driving tests usually peaks in the summer and around the New Year? If you’re looking for a driving school in Renfrewshire or Glasgow, try aiming for "off-peak" months like November or February.
While the Scottish weather might be a bit "dreich," the waiting lists are often slightly shorter, and you’ll gain valuable experience driving in less-than-perfect conditions: which actually makes you a much better driver in the long run!
