So, to help you stay on the right side of the law and keep your hard-earned cash, I’ve put together the 7 most common mistakes we’re seeing right now: and exactly how you can fix them.
1. Using a Third-Party "Cancellation Finder" App
This is the biggest one! For years, learners used apps and bots to scan for earlier test slots. But as of May 12, 2026, the DVSA made this practice strictly against the law.
The new system is now "hardened" against bots. If you use a third-party service to log into your GOV.UK account, you risk having your booking cancelled entirely: and in some cases, being blocked from the system.
How to Fix It:
The only way to book or change a test is through the official GOV.UK portal. I know it’s frustrating when waiting times are long, but the system is much fairer now that the bots have been cleared out! Our instructors can help you gauge when you’ll be ready so you can book the right date the first time.
2. Asking Your Instructor to Book for You
I know, I know: in the "old days," your instructor could log in and handle the admin for you. It was super helpful! However, under the May 2026 rules, only the learner is allowed to manage their booking.
When you log in, you now have to tick a legal declaration confirming you are the candidate. If an instructor or a business (even a great one like us!) books a car test for a student, they are now breaking the law.
How to Fix It:
Take control of your own portal! If you’re looking for driving lessons in Glasgow or automatic driving lessons in Glasgow, your instructor will still give you their ADI number. You should definitely add this to your booking so the DVSA can link your progress, but the actual "click" must be done by you.
3. Waiting Until the Last Minute to Reschedule
Back in 2024, you only needed to give 3 working days' notice to change your test. But since April 2025, that window has widened significantly. You now need to give at least 10 full working days’ notice to change or cancel your test if you want to keep your fee.
If you wake up on a Monday and realize your test is on Friday and you aren't ready, you're going to lose your money.
How to Fix It:
Be honest with yourself (and your instructor) early! We use a dedicated student portal at Allison Driver Academy to track your progress. Check your "ready-to-pass" stats at least three weeks before your test date. If you aren't hitting the marks, move the test before that 10-day countdown begins!
4. Burning Through Your "Two Changes" Limit
This is a brand-new hurdle that arrived on March 31, 2026. You are now only allowed to change your test booking a maximum of two times.
In the past, people would book a test six months away and "move it forward" every time they found a cancellation. You can't do that anymore. Once you’ve moved it twice, your booking is "locked." If you can't make that third date, you have to cancel it, lose your fee, and start the whole process again.
How to Fix It:
Don't "placeholder" book. Only book a test when you and your instructor agree you're within 2-3 months of being ready. If you're doing manual driving lessons in Glasgow, make sure you've covered all the major roundabouts and high-speed roads before you even think about hitting that "Book" button. Save your "changes" for genuine emergencies!
5. Playing the "Test Centre Lottery"
Because slots in cities like Glasgow are so popular, some learners used to book a test in a random town (like Wick or Penzance!) just to get into the system, then try to move it back to their local centre later.
As of June 9, 2026, the DVSA stopped this. You can now only move a test to one of the three nearest centres to your original booking.
How to Fix It:
If you live in Lanarkshire or Renfrewshire, stick to the centres you actually know and where your instructor provides lessons. Booking a "dummy" test in a different part of the country is now a dead end. 6. Booking Before You're "Ready to Pass"
The DVSA is really cracking down on what they call "unprepared candidates." While the "28-day retest rule" (where you'd have to wait a full month after failing) has been a hot topic of debate, the best way to avoid it is to simply pass the first time!
A huge mistake learners make is booking a test because they want to pass, not because they can pass. If you fail, you're now looking at a minimum wait that is much longer than it used to be due to these new management rules.
How to Fix It:

7. Forgetting About Fleet and Trailer Rules
It's not just learner drivers who have to be careful! We’ve noticed a lot of businesses in the Glasgow area getting confused about the rules for fleet driver assessments and B+E trailer training. While the specific 2026 "learner" booking rules (like the 2-change limit) are mainly for car tests, the 10-day cancellation notice applies across more services now.
How to Fix It:
