Hello there! Are you planning a getaway with a caravan to the stunning Loch Lomond? Or maybe you’ve finally bought that horsebox for weekend events in Lanarkshire? Towing adds a whole new dimension of freedom to your driving, but it can also feel a little bit daunting the first time you look in your mirrors and see a massive trailer following you!
At Allison Driver Academy, we’re all about helping you feel confident and safe on the road. Whether you're navigating the busy streets for your first driving lessons in Glasgow or you're an experienced driver looking to master the art of the reverse-tuck with a trailer, we’ve got your back.
In this guide, we’re going to break down everything you need to know about B+E trailer training in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, and Renfrewshire. Let’s get you hitched up and ready to go!
Do I Still Need a "Trailer Test" in 2026?
This is the question we get asked most often! You might remember hearing about the "B+E Test" (or the car and trailer test). Well, back in December 2021, the UK government changed the rules.
Currently, if you have a standard car driving licence (Category B), you are automatically allowed to tow trailers up to 3,500kg MAM (Maximum Authorised Mass). This means most people don't actually need to take a formal DVSA test anymore to legally tow a caravan or horsebox.
However: and this is a big "however": just because you can legally tow doesn't mean you're naturally ready for it!
Towing a heavy load changes how your car handles, how it brakes, and especially how it reverses. That’s why professional training is more popular than ever. Our team, which includes both fully qualified instructors and expert trainee (PDI) instructors, provides hands-on sessions across our driving school Lanarkshire and driving school Renfrewshire locations to make sure you're truly road-ready.
Why Professional Trailer Training is a Game-Changer

If you've never towed before, the physics of it can be a bit of a surprise! Here’s what we focus on during our B+E training sessions to keep you and your cargo safe:
1. The Art of Reversing
It’s the stuff of nightmares: trying to reverse a caravan into a tight campsite pitch while everyone watches! We teach you the "opposite-lock" technique and help you understand the pivot points of your trailer. After a few hours with us, you’ll be backing into spots like a pro.
2. Safe Hitching and Unhitching
Getting the trailer onto the towball safely is vital. We walk you through the "C-O-L-T" checks (Coupling, Oil/Fluids, Lights, Tyres) and ensure you know how to use the breakaway cable correctly. It’s all about building those habits so you never have a "whoops" moment on the M8!
3. Loading and Weight Distribution
Did you know that an unevenly loaded trailer is one of the main causes of "snaking" (swaying) at high speeds? We'll show you how to pack your trailer so the weight is balanced, keeping your car stable even in those famous Scottish crosswinds.

Essential Towing Tips for Scottish Roads
Driving in the West of Scotland comes with its own unique challenges: from the tight, winding roads around the Trossachs to the busy motorway interchanges in Glasgow. Here are a few friendly reminders:
- Watch Your Speed: When towing, your speed limits change! On a single carriageway, it’s 50mph, and on dual carriageways or motorways, it’s 60mph.
- Check Your Mirrors: You must have an adequate view down both sides of your trailer. If your caravan is wider than your car, you’ll need to pop on some extension mirrors.
- The "Rule of 85": For safety, it’s often recommended that the weight of your loaded trailer shouldn't exceed 85% of your car's kerb weight, especially if you're new to towing.
