Do I Still Need a "Trailer Test" in 2026?
This is the question we get asked most often! You might remember hearing about the "B+E Test" (or the car and trailer test). Well, back in December 2021, the UK government changed the rules.
Currently, if you have a standard car driving licence (Category B), you are automatically allowed to tow trailers up to 3,500kg MAM (Maximum Authorised Mass). This means most people don't actually need to take a formal DVSA test anymore to legally tow a caravan or horsebox.
However: and this is a big "however": just because you can legally tow doesn't mean you're naturally ready for it!

Essential Towing Tips for Scottish Roads
Driving in the West of Scotland comes with its own unique challenges: from the tight, winding roads around the Trossachs to the busy motorway interchanges in Glasgow. Here are a few friendly reminders:
- Watch Your Speed: When towing, your speed limits change! On a single carriageway, it’s 50mph, and on dual carriageways or motorways, it’s 60mph.
- Check Your Mirrors: You must have an adequate view down both sides of your trailer. If your caravan is wider than your car, you’ll need to pop on some extension mirrors.
- The "Rule of 85": For safety, it’s often recommended that the weight of your loaded trailer shouldn't exceed 85% of your car's kerb weight, especially if you're new to towing.
