Step 1: The Paperwork and the Background Check
Before you can even touch a steering wheel with a student, you need to get the green light from the DVSA. This involves a specialized DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check.
Since you’ll be working with a wide range of people: including young learner drivers in Glasgow: safety is the top priority. This initial admin stage usually takes about 4 to 6 weeks. Once you’re cleared and registered as a candidate, the real fun begins!
Part 1: The Theory & Hazard Perception
Timeline: 1–3 Months
Think of this as the "mega-version" of the learner theory test. You’ll need to master the Highway Code, instructional techniques, and advanced hazard perception.
- What it involves: 100 multiple-choice questions and a hazard perception test with 14 video clips.
- How long it takes: Most of our trainees spend about 4 to 8 weeks studying.

Part 2: Driving Ability
Timeline: 2–4 Months
Now it’s time to show off those skills. Part 2 is an advanced driving test. You’ll be expected to drive to a very high standard with almost no errors.
- The training: You’ll typically need about 20 to 40 hours of advanced driving practice.
- The wait: Depending on the latest DVSA booking rules, waiting times for a test in Glasgow or Lanarkshire can vary between 6 and 12 weeks.
